    Welcome from the Chancellor

Welcome to Dwight. Whether you are visiting our site for the first time as a prospective family or looking to reconnect as one of our active alumni, I hope you will find in these pages information and ideas that reveal the unique wonders of the Dwight community.

Like many schools with a history as long as ours (over 125 years), Dwight is proud of its longstanding traditions and past successes.  But as exciting as this past is, it is our present and our future that enliven me every day. Our traditions have allowed us to become an American global school committed to deeply connecting students to the international communities they will inhabit for the rest of their lives. Dwight students learn to see connections across cultures and to succeed at the highest possible levels.  They are encouraged, challenged, and supported by our highly talented faculty and administrative staff, a group imbued with a passionate commitment to helping every child succeed.

While the majority of our students come from New York City, all members of our community embrace the School’s global mission. As the first school in the United States to offer the three International Baccalaureate (IB) programs Preschool-12, Dwight is an acknowledged leader in IB education.  In part because of the IB, Dwight students are encouraged to dream, take intellectual risks, and build their leadership skills through action.

It has been my privilege to be the educational steward of thousands of students over the past forty years, and each day I find new reasons to be proud of the mark these students have made on the world. Their stories, and the stories of our current students, are an integral part of the story of our School and the development of the International Baccalaureate around the world.

We invite you to explore this website, but, more importantly, if you happen to be in New York, London, Vancouver Island, Seoul, or Beijing, come spend some time with us and experience for yourselves that special “spark of genius” within our schools.

Thank you again for your interest in The Dwight School.

    Sincerely,

    Stephen H. Spahn

    Dwight's Mission Statement
The Dwight School, an internationally recognized college preparatory school with a rich tradition of academic excellence, trains its students to be leaders with a strong sense of community responsibility.

Every student has a "spark of genius," and our goal is to nurture that potential. Kindling their interests, we strive to develop inquisitive, informed, and ethical citizens who, with a sense of global kinship, will take action to build a better world.
Three pillars define our community life:

    Global Vision:
At Dwight, we encourage students to see challenges from a global perspective. Our students follow the rigorous International Baccalaureate curriculum, interact with peers and faculty from forty countries, and travel the globe for service projects, athletic competitions, and student leadership conferences. In addition, Dwight students have access to our campuses in London, Vancouver Island, Beijing, and Seoul for a growing number of exchanges, collaboration with programs and curricula, and a global alumni network.

Community Service: We inspire and educate our students to take action to improve the world. Dwight students undertake meaningful service projects both locally and internationally and produce written reflections to demonstrate their learning and their impact. Whether helping a classmate with a math assignment or building a school in a remote African village, Dwight students are prepared to serve their communities wherever they go.

Personalized Learning: We focus on developing each student’s unique “spark of genius.” Whether connecting a student with an exceptional mentor, designing tailor-made enrichment, crafting a special study abroad opportunity, or providing a novel program or tutorial, Dwight goes out of its way both in and out of the classroom to recognize and foster each student’s gifts and talents.
