ICL Community Service

The Institute for Civic Leadership (ICL) is a non-profit organization based at The Dwight School whose mission is to prepare the next generation of civic leaders to be active and engaged citizens who contribute to a culture of peace in their local and global communities. The ICL Fellows learn about global issues, human rights, current events, and media literacy. ICL Fellows sharpen their communication skills and increase their confidence through leadership training, which enables them to organize leadership conferences throughout the school year. To learn more about the ICL, please visit the ICL Website. Read below to find out how the ICL plays a role in Dwight's IB Program.

Students in Grades 6-12 are encouraged to engage in meaningful ICL community service projects as an important component of their IB education and personal development. In keeping with our mission and the curriculum of the International Baccalaureate, The Dwight School has instituted a community service requirement for all Franklin and Anglo House students. Franklin House students are required to perform a minimum of 50 hours of community service during ninth and tenth grades. Anglo House IB Diploma candidates must invest a minimum of 155 hours in activities participating in projects involving Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) and submit reflective essays. Activities to fulfill the CAS requirements have included projects associated with The American Museum of Natural History, Yorkville Common Pantry, Joint Schools, New York Cares, the ICL and many other local and international organizations. Anglo House students who are certificate candidates are required to complete 50 hours of community service. Students who enter Dwight in grades 10 or 12 (and are not Diploma Program candidates) are required to perform 25 hours of community service. Service hours performed the summer before entering a specific grade may be counted for that grade. Students in Bentley House (grades 6-8) participate in class projects and are invited to age appropriate on-campus community service opportunities.

To validate community service hours, students in grades 9 and 10 and juniors as well as seniors who are not full IB diploma candidates should request written confirmation of their community service from the organization for whom the service was performed. When this is not possible. an email or note from a parent / guardian with the student's name / grade / service performed / hours of service is acceptable. Hours for service that is not Dwight sponsored do count towards one's required hours. Students may also (but are not required to) submit their hours using a Dwight Community Service Hours Documentation Form, which is available from the Associate Dean of Student Affairs or from the academic portal of MyDwight.

Senior full IB Diploma candidates graduatiing in 2009 must submit their hours on a CAS/AEF Reflective Form. These forms are available in the academic portal of MyDwight. There will be new guidelines posted later this year for those DP candidates graduating in 2010 and beyond.
