Small Wonder Programs

preschool child during play time

"Small Wonder gave all three of my children confidence in beginning preschool ― they separated easily and acclimated to their new environments, playing with new classmates and exploring activities independently. Small Wonder made my kids excited to continue on to ‘big kid’ school, and I feel fortunate they had this positive pre-preschool experience."

This music-driven class includes open play, circle time with songs, fingerplays and rhymes, snack and story time, gross motor play, dance and bubbles in the gym, sensory exploration and playdough, and a lullabye goodbye. Small Wonder Next Steps

COVID-19 Update: Small Wonder Next Steps' start date is pending. Click here to fill out the registration form to indicate your interest; we will update you as soon as possible.

This gentle separation program designed for children, 18 months and older, who are not yet age-eligible for Dwight's fully separated preschool 2s program, but ready to join a classroom community independent of their trusted adult. Next Steps students turn 2 prior to March 1 of the academic year, and attend class with their parent or caregiver for at least the first month of the program. As children demonstrate their readiness, teachers assist students with the separation process. The familiar classroom environment provides structure and guidance, while allowing children to explore. Teachers encourage independent exploration and facilitate cooperative play, helping students to make friends, learn to take turns, and build language and social-emotional skills. Daily group activities include free play, art, music, circle time, gym play, snack, and story time. This program helps young students acquire and understanding of preschool and develop a lifelong love of learning. Classes meet twice weekly for 90 minutes in the afternoons, 2:30-4pm, for the full academic year.

Applicants to Dwight Preschool who are currently enrolled Small Wonder or Small Wonder Next Steps students are offered an abbreviated admissions process and an Early Notification Option.
