How Do Universities View the International Baccalaureate Diploma?
January 26, 2026
The International Baccalaureate curriculum has long been recognized for its challenging academics and focus on research skills, critical thinking, and global mindedness.
Students who undertake the IB Diploma Programme, the two-year program for high school juniors and seniors, have proven they are dedicated to excellence and can handle very demanding coursework.
Consequently, admission teams at colleges and universities consider International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme candidates with special regard, and often highlight their applications as demonstrating a special focus on academic rigor and success.
The “IB Advantage”
The IB’s rigor attracts students who care about a well-rounded education that places learning at its core, not just assessment results, and prepares students to take on real world challenges. At Dwight Global Online School, ranked #1 online high school in the United States, IB DP students learn alongside classmates and faculty from all over the world, an element that makes it easy to develop a deep understanding of different cultural perspectives.
The IB program encourages students to incorporate their knowledge of cultural perspectives into class discussions and complex problem-solving. IB diploma classes engage students with national and international issues across the curriculum, which is recognized and respected internationally and considered the “gold standard” in high school education.
"People talk about the 'IB Advantage,'” said Dwight Global’s IB Diploma Programme Coordinator and IBDP Global Politics Teacher Mr. Rob Allan.
“In a 2020 study, IB Diploma graduates outstripped the US national average by nearly 20% when it came to immediate post-secondary enrollment,” said Mr. Allan.
“The same study revealed that more than 90% of IB Diploma graduates succeed in their post-secondary programs. The data suggests that IB Diploma students are more likely to receive immediate enrollment in post-secondary institutions, and are more likely to stay enrolled than the US national average. These are just two examples of what is meant by the ‘IB Advantage,’” he continued.
Wide, Deep Curriculum
By all metrics, International Baccalaureate graduates do well. The IB diploma requires students to study six subjects, and three of them must be taken at the higher level, with each class providing 240 hours of teaching. International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme candidates also must take a second language. For these reasons, and others, IB DP graduates demonstrate high achievement in high school and have track records of success at the college level, as well.
Candidates Focus Less on Grades, More on Learning
IB DP students have three requirements in addition to their academic subjects: Theory of Knowledge, CAS projects, and the Extended Essay. The creativity, action, service (CAS) project focuses on 150 hours of hands-on learning through direct experience. Students may travel for their project. In all cases, CAS promotes a sense of initiative and the drive for students to plan their own activities, skills that help distinguish IB students from other high school graduates.
With deep experience as an IBDP Coordinator and international educator, Mr. Allan said he's passionate about the IB mission of “developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world."
Interdisciplinary Study
One of the main differences between the IB DP and other academic pathways is the mandatory interdisciplinary class called Theory of Knowledge. TOK class encourages students to make connections between subjects and develop skills that hone critical thinking and effective learning. Making connections between subjects also helps prepare students for higher education, where learning is less compartmentalized.
Fosters Independent, Prepared Students
Every IB DP student also undertakes the Extended Essay, an immersive paper of up to 4,000 words that requires independent research, highly developed organizational skills, analysis, extensive writing, and communication skills. Those many EE requirements are over and above what some colleges require of their students, another fact that makes IB DP high school students appealing candidates to admission teams.
The IB DP’s rigorous academic pathway hones study skills, time management, and organizational strategies crucial for college and professional life. Successful candidates create habits that involve prioritizing homework and test preparation, a discipline that ensures success in the international education of the IB DP.
