How to Minimize Stress in Your Online Student's Life

April 17, 2024

Stress is a part of life for all human beings, and students are no exception. According to the American Psychological Association, more than 60 percent of students report feeling stressed on a daily basis. Students moving from one school to another often experience stress, no matter where they live, their grade level, or the type of school they attend.

The good news is that unnecessary stress can be minimized. For a student attending a private online high school like Dwight Global Online School, there are many supports in place for students so stress does not become overwhelming—and strategies for how it can be reduced.

Read on for more tips on eliminating unnecessary stress.

Establish a Routine

One of the biggest benefits of attending an online school is flexibility. Whether an aspiring performing artist or athlete, online students can carve out time to study around rehearsals, practice, and training sessions. With a structured routine and a flexible schedule, online students have time to maximize their hours and fit in all they need to do.

One of the best ways to minimize stress is by establishing a solid routine during the school week. Create a schedule that creates enough time for academics as well as ample sleep, exercise, and down time – including time with friends, family, and quiet time to decompress.

Set Realistic Expectations

To succeed as an online student,  develop an effective workflow and positive study habits. Below are some things to consider:

  • Progress over perfection. Not every student will excel in every subject. Focus on small steps of improvement over perfect marks on every assignment.

  • Take a break. Sometimes it is best to step away and come back to the content later.

  • Ask for help. Teachers are available for one-on-one discussions as needed. At Dwight Global, for example, students can schedule extra time with their teachers for guidance and support.

Monitor Screen Time

Students today are bombarded by screen stimulation, which can add to stress. Several studies show there is a negative connection between excessive screen time and mental health among adolescents. Find positive ways to reduce unnecessary screen time and reserve it for school work and socializing instead of unproductive scrolling.

Promote Self Care

Many students understand the importance of self-care, particularly regarding minimizing stress. Below are examples of self-care for online students:

  • Healthy hygiene habits – i.e., regular showers, dental care, hair brushing, etc.

  • Maintain a balanced diet – including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

  • Practice mindfulness – with meditation, writing in a journal, etc.

  • Positive sleep habits – getting plenty of uninterrupted sleep in a clean bed.

  • Hydrate – drink plenty of water throughout the day.

  • Exercise and fresh air. Get outside and move the body on a regular basis.

  • Socialize. It is important to connect with friends, either virtually or in person.

Of course, students often need guidance in knowing what to do and what strategies to try. At Dwight Global, Director of School Counseling Michael Haber is available to meet with students and consult with faculty in order to best support students whenever they’re feeling they could use some help with a challenge they’re facing.

Celebrate Successes and Milestones

Make sure to celebrate academic successes, however small,  as well as successes outside of school. Recognizing milestones and achieved goals has a significant impact on confidence and setting future goals.
