How the Online IB Diploma Encourages Interdisciplinary Learning

July 8, 2025

Recognized worldwide as one of the most challenging academic programs, the International Baccalaureate program is often referred to as the “gold standard” in pre-university preparation.

For students in preschool through grade 12, the IB has interdisciplinary learning centered at the heart of its educational design. Tailored to four specific age groups, the IB programs together take a global approach, looking at big ideas across disciplines and enabling students to dig deep into their coursework. The IB encourages students to think critically, creatively, and ethically. The curriculum fosters lifelong learners and embeds interdisciplinary learning across programs and within grade levels.

advantages of online IB diploma program

The IB Diploma Program for high school juniors and seniors provides the ideal academic framework for educating internationally-minded problem-solvers: students who are culturally agile and often multilingual. The coveted IB diploma positions students for success and prepares them as the next generation of global leaders.

Dwight Global Online School, a respected worldwide leader in online education and one of the first schools to offer the IB and the IBDP online, teaches students to approach their studies holistically. As a result, the IB program aligns with Dwight Global’s mission to ignite the spark of learning in every child. The interdisciplinary IB curriculum also aligns with Dwight Global’s mission to provide an education helping students to make sense of the complexities of the world around them, and equip them with the skills and dispositions needed for taking responsible action for the future.

“Dwight’s IB program provides opportunities for students to connect their conceptual understanding across their courses,” said Dwight Global’s Director of IB Studies Megan Koepsell.   “Interdisciplinary learning continually drives the seminal Core projects, allowing students to exercise critical thinking, research, and action in their studies.”

Interdisciplinary Learning

Beginning in the middle school years and continuing into high school, Dwight Global Online School introduces students to an inquiry-based curriculum, where they are encouraged to collaborate, think critically and independently, and apply their knowledge to the world around them. As they embrace new challenges, students develop new interests and discover they love to learn. These essential skills serve as a launchpad for the IB higher-level courses.

The IB Diploma Program’s two-year program progression requires students to take six classes concurrently with the Core curriculum. The Core comprises the Theory of Knowledge Course, which explores the nature and dimension of knowledge, the Extended Essay, where students write an academic research essay, and the CAS program that seeks to develop the student through creativity, activity, and service. All Core classes offer students choice and combine and cross over academic disciplines, fostering critical thinking, research skills and real world problem solving.

With the IB Diploma Program, students personalize their course selections and have flexibility to take classes at a standard level or a higher level.  In addition, students get to curate their course selections with a variety of class options as well as opportunities to conduct scholarly research in areas of personal interest. Each student must complete an extended essay, which is a research project on a topic of their own choosing. To obtain the IB Diploma, students must take at least three higher level classes. The full complement of IB course offerings is detailed in Dwight’s Upper School Curriculum Guide.
