What is a Learning Coach in Online School?
December 5, 2025
For online educators and the families who work with them, the term “Learning Coach” is used to describe an adult helper at home who encourages online students to stay on track with their assignments and schedules.
While a tutor assists students outside of class with content and academic comprehension, a learning coach’s duties are more focused on executive functioning skills. Typically, the coach works in person with the student to model, guide, and monitor time management, organization, daily planning, self-advocacy, study skills, test prep, and communication skills.

Students benefit greatly from a learning coach at home, especially at the middle school and high school level. An online student’s learning coach is often a parent or guardian, just as it might be for students at traditional schools. The coach’s level of involvement is driven by the student’s age and individual needs, with younger students requiring closer supervision.
The goal of a learning coach is to ensure that an online student gets the most from their education and to direct the student well enough that they are ultimately able to work on their own. The student is guided toward ownership of their work, self-motivation, and responsibility for completing tasks comprehensively and with excellence.
Increased Communication
The learning coach is also an additional adult in the student’s life who is able to pinpoint any persistent issues with schoolwork or learning. Once identified, difficulties are communicated by the learning coach to faculty and other learning specialists, who devise a plan for the best way to move forward.
When needing to communicate on any matters regarding the student and schoolwork, the learning coach coordinates directly with faculty for younger students, and encourages and assists older students to do so themselves, often helping craft emails or messages alongside the student.
In an online school environment, the need for well-developed executive functioning skills is vital. Dwight Global works with families to support the development of strong skills, with the goal of ensuring each student's independent success in the classroom and outside it.
Dwight Global Online School
At Dwight Global Online School, the #1-ranked private online high school in the United States, school leadership and faculty work on the school side to routinely motivate and encourage students to stay on track with their work. Experienced online teachers provide students with a roadmap for effective time management, study skills, and test preparation. Students are invited to meet one-on-one with their teachers before or after class for extra help, or in special meetings.
At home, a learning coach augments the efforts of faculty at school, making certain there are no gaps in understanding, communication, or scheduling efficiency.
For students who require or prefer it, Dwight Global also offers an in-school program called Quest, for extra support. Some of these students have special education learning plans, and others do not.
Quest Teachers are unique in that they provide essential support in two critical areas: Academic Content Support and Executive Functioning Skills.
Leah Poole, the Head of Quest and Special Services at Dwight Global, said Quest program teachers have backgrounds in all disciplines, and that they support students with Dwight Global’s curriculum across a wide range of subjects. Quest teachers provide direct one-on-one assistance to ensure students master challenging concepts, review material before assessments, and close any gaps in their content knowledge.
“Quest teachers are plugged into the Dwight Global curriculum and are on the inside when it comes to knowledge of faculty assignments and requirements. This is especially effective for the student, who receives continual support and quickly makes adjustments. The Quest program enriches student learning and delivers positive outcomes,” she said. In addition to direct one-on-one academic support, Quest teachers also regularly consult with the student’s classroom teachers.
Crucially, Quest teachers work to strengthen the core executive functioning skills necessary for success in an online environment. They help students implement and maintain effective organizational and time management systems. Additionally, they guide students through the process of self-monitoring, helping them learn how to recognize when they are struggling and teaching them effective self-advocacy strategies to communicate their needs to their teachers.
This comprehensive, two-pronged approach ensures that students not only understand what they are learning but also develop the essential how-to-learn skills that will serve them well in every future academic and professional endeavor.
