Nine Tips for Success in an Online International Baccalaureate Program

September 5, 2025

How to be successful in the IB program?

In school chatrooms and hallways worldwide, an often-heard message is that the International Baccalaureate program is difficult, and a challenge not for the faint of heart.

Students, families, school personnel, and college admissions teams know it takes tremendous discipline, a positive mindset, and productive habits to thrive in International Baccalaureate classes, and especially when pursuing the IB Diploma Program, a two year academic pathway for juniors and seniors known for its rigorous curriculum and global focus.

With dedication and perseverance, however, completing the IB successfully is possible, and a rewarding and worthy goal. Read below for 9 tips for success in an online IB program, whether taking IB classes or fully completing the IB DP.

1. Choose your online school carefully

Being successful in an IB program, especially an online IB program like the one offered by the highly ranked Dwight Global Online School, a leader in IB education for students in grades 6-12, is easier when students are prepared for what is to come and have plans and strategies from the start.

IB students are introduced early to the IB principles of thinking critically, globally, and in service to the world. They become familiar with the IB Learner Profile, a framework of 10 aspirational qualities and skills the IB promotes and nurtures. They learn to work collaboratively, manage their time, and think independently. They learn to be responsible for their own work, too, which gives them a head start on meeting the challenges of the IB curriculum.

Online IB high schoolers can tackle the IB coursework successfully, especially when experienced faculty and school leadership are there to inform, support, and guide.

Choosing the right online school is important. It should be accredited, established, and include live class experiences. Having a strong school community and ways to keep students involved and engaged are also vital components to support student success

“At Dwight Global Online, our students have access to an amazing support network,” said Rob Allan, IB Diploma Programme Coordinator. “This includes, but is not limited to, our highly qualified IB teachers.  It extends far beyond the classroom to include our dedicated IB Leads, who ensure curriculum alignment and delivery; our professional and caring IB Deans, who help with scheduling, academic, behavioural, and social emotional support; and our experienced and knowledgeable IB Coordinator, who builds community within the program and ensures its optimal functioning. Finally, the IB program as a whole receives the strong support of an outstanding team of school leaders and counselors who work with all levels of the IB program to ensure it is aligning with Dwight’s mission to ignite the spark of genius in every child.”

2. Select online International Baccalaureate classes wisely

Students at Dwight Global are advised on course selection and which academic pathway to pursue. They receive expert guidance from experienced online faculty and support from an entire school community that nurtures student passions.

3. Discover connections in the IB program

Dwight Global teaches students to metacognitively understand the connections between, and among, IB academic courses and the core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), and the Extended Essay. These three classes teach students how to think and analyse, to research and write, and to find ways to make the world a better place.

4. Seek out support and practice self care

Success in an online IB program at every age or level is best achieved when students learn to take care of themselves. They protect their sleep, are disciplined about getting fresh air and exercise, take breaks from screens and work, and find time to make meaningful connections with people they care about. Learning to reach out to others for help, be it in school or outside it, is an important life skill. The IB teaches students to master it.

5. Create a routine

Routines are important for self-care, of course, and are also crucial for academic and extracurricular life. Students who want to succeed will map out daily, weekly, and monthly schedules, and revise those schedules regularly to optimize their time.

Online scheduling tools for calendars and for recording and celebrating progress and improvement are available from librarians, teachers, and guidance counselors. Students are able to have control over which platforms and methods work best for them, and should try various tools until they find which works best for them.

6. Avoid multitasking while studying for International Baccalaureate

Apart from exercising and listening to books or lectures or music, multitasking has been proven to diminish focus, especially in class. The most successful IB students report devoting themselves to a high level of concentration while in class, and focusing on one thing at a time.

7. Study interactively, Listen with full focus and attention

Listening actively in class and taking notes with full attention is a top strategy for many successful IB students. The method helps students understand concepts and the way they dovetail and overlap, rather than simply memorizing the material.

Prestudying, or reading and researching ahead of classroom discussions, provides a preview and a structured framework. Then, students can use classroom time for the benefit of asking deeper questions and reinforcing the prelearning.

Successful studying is a habit, and the best students understand that prestudying, a follow up review after class, and studying with focus before assessments are best undertaken with the same laser-focused approach. IB students are dedicated to finding the best way to learn, discovering their own learning style, and then practicing the material over and over again until they have it down cold.

8. Take International Baccalaureate program practice tests consistently

IB practice tests and papers from past years are a vital way to master the material and become fully immersed in the learning. Set aside time to churn through these practice tests until the questions become almost second nature. One student said he used practice tests so often he began to think like the test writers.

9. Understand online IB program scoring and assessments

Learn how the IB assessments are scored, and understand how to take the test. Should you guess if you aren’t sure? Should you leave questions blank?
