What to Expect in an Online School in 12th Grade

April 4, 2022

Regardless of the type of school a student attends, senior year of high school is an eventful year of celebration, closure, and anticipation. Students must balance the demands of the college application process with their final classes and grades, and they must make time for the many special events that celebrate their social connections and accomplishments.

At Dwight Global Online School, the academically rigorous online school curriculum is taught by experienced, accessible faculty who care deeply about student success, and who take the time to get to know students individually.  Combined with connections with administrators, deans, and staff, students are continually supported in their important academic, personal and emotional development, ensuring they are fully prepared and ready to move forward after high school graduation.

Because Dwight Global offers the International Baccalaureate program, seniors are also busy with final preparations for their culminating IB assessments. Those in the IB Diploma Program complete their Extended Essay.  Similarly, students taking Advanced Placement classes prepare for AP exams and final projects.

For some students, senior year marks the end of years of learning with the same classmates, an especially poignant time for both students and the faculty that have seen them grow before moving on to college and university, where graduates will employ all that they have learned at Dwight.

A Day in the Life

  • A full day at Dwight Global might find grade 12 students doing the following:
  • Simulating investing in capital markets in Advanced Placement Microeconomics class, to stay on the pulse of the microeconomics environment in regards to companies’ cash flows, margins, and regulatory framework.
  • Studying Edgar Allen Poe’s The Pit and the Pendulum, and then collaborating in small groups to evaluate and analyze the scientific underpinnings of Poe’s story.
  • Mentoring younger students in a service project which provides tutoring for students in another country.
  • Attending a virtual visit with a college or university of their choice.
  • Conducting an AP Biology lab experiment, at home, on the effectiveness of different sweeteners on CO2 production by yeast.

Throughout their senior year, Dwight Global students take part in a full complement of clubs and after-school opportunities.  As seniors, they often take on leadership and mentoring roles with their chosen activities.  Dwight Global students also have access to opportunities unique to Dwight, such as in-person and virtual visits to Dwight’s global campuses.

College and University in Their Futures

Seniors also work under the guidance of expert college counselors to choose a college, which is the culmination of their academic journey through high school.  At Dwight Global, this process begins in 9th grade.  Seniors are carefully paired with an expert counselor who guides and supports them through the college process and helps them identify the college that is the best fit based on their academic profiles, personal interests, and aspirations. Among the school’s recent college matriculations: Columbia, Harvard, Stanford, NYU, Princeton, Duke, University of Pennsylvania, Vassar, Middlebury, Georgetown, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UVA, University of Michigan, and Wesleyan.

At this highly ranked accredited online high school, seniors take part in numerous traditions to celebrate their high school experience.  These feature online activities as well as opportunities on Dwight campuses around the world. Seniors come together as a class to “ring the bell” for the first day of class senior year, and throughout the year they participate in Senior Sundays, where they gather as a group to collaborate and bond.

The closing weeks of online high school are marked by the final Senior Sunday, senior dinner, prom, and graduation, all of which celebrate the important milestones in a student’s life.  These senior week activities are held virtually and at venues in New York City, including the Dwight School’s New York campus, for students who wish to attend in person.
