Dwight Global students gathered in person February 2-4 at Dwight Global’s 2024 STEAM Weekend, an annual event exploring science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.
Students came from a number of U.S. states and countries around the
globe to participate in the event, which focused on a theme of “Mysteries Revealed.” A Dwight Global tradition, STEAM weekend is just one program Dwight Global hosts to bring its online students together in the real world. The weekend included enriching activities designed to challenge students academically and to enrich connections among the Dwight Global community.
One highlight of the weekend was the frog dissection lab conducted under the guidance of Dwight Global biology teachers Stacie Kilhaney and Stephanie Castle.
“Parents talk to me all the time about what they remember from biology classes,” said Ms. Kilhaney. “Frog dissection is a quintessential experience for American high school biology students. Everyone remembers dissecting a frog, and tells stories about it even in adulthood. I wanted to give our Dwight Global students that same experience, and leave them with something they could remember into their future.”
In addition to lab rotations, students also enjoyed spending time in the
Makerspace with Design teacher James Dec. Students participated in the Makeable Challenge and were asked to design and make a 3D printed product or prototype that improves the day-to-day life of a real-life client, Cath. Through this process, students implemented the design principles of empathy, brainstorming, prototype, feedback, build, and reiterate.
STEAM participants also bonded through a psychology lesson and Student Olympics organized by Dwight Global’s Student Council. After a visit to the Liberty Science Center, they capped off the weekend on an evening boat cruise around Manhattan, with dinner, dancing, and fantastic views of the New York skyline.
Christa, a Dwight Global Junior who flew from California to join the weekend, said, “I loved STEAM weekend! It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had because I got to participate in interesting academic courses while bonding with my friends and teachers.”
Dwight Global stands out among other online schools for its strong community. Dwight Global students have deans, participate in real-time, virtual classes, take leadership positions in clubs and houses, and meet for other in-person events, including orientation, music performances, prom, and graduation.
A nationally ranked online private school, Dwight Global blends online, on-campus, and residential learning experiences, allowing students to pursue a program personalized for Grades 6-12. Dwight Global is part of the Dwight Schools network, which was founded in 1872 and has grown to include six physical campuses, including New York, London, Shanghai, Seoul, Hanoi, and Dubai.
