Lower School Spark of Genius Courses: One Week
Our one-week Spark of Genius courses meet daily. Students who successfully complete the course earn a certificate. Tuition for one-week Spark of Genius courses is $250.

Get moving by dancing and singing along with Broadway musicals! Through shows like Willy Wonka, The Music Man, Honk, Alice in Wonderland, James and the Giant Peach, and Annie, you will learn technique, expressions, and most of all, get on your feet and have some fun! You will learn basic stage directions in order to understand space that you're moving in; explore dance movements and be able to recreate and identify them; and understand and be able to use the five elements of dance (body, action, space, time, and energy) in your dances. You'll also be introduced to the concepts of song interpretation, the study of characters, expressions in movement, and story lines.

What makes a book a classic? From Alice in Wonderland to Peter Pan, this course will introduce you to some of the most beloved children’s classic books of all time. Each day, we will explore a children's novel that has been loved for generations, discover more about the author, and delve further into the meanings behind their famous work. As we read specific chapters, you will be encouraged to read the book in its entirety.

Kristy Benfante | Turn on Your Writing Radar! Creative Writing for Kids, Grades 3-5
- Two weeks | June 21- July 2 | 11 am eastern
During the first week, students will get to know themselves better as writers. We will engage in fun brainstorming and free-writing activities to spark our ideas as well as share favorite stories that have inspired us as writers. Then we will learn how to develop characters and settings and discover different ways of storytelling. The second week will be designed as a “writing workshop,” where students will be encouraged to use what we’ve learned from week one and apply it to write an original short story. Students will receive feedback from the teacher and their peers during their writing journey which will ultimately lead us to a publishing party to celebrate and share our final writing pieces.

Flex your creative writing muscles! With exercises in poetry, prose, and short fiction, you'll get to do just that! We will also read and discuss selected works by well-known New York based and international writers.

Tameka Jeffers | Hear, Here, Hare, Hair | Grades 4-8

We will discuss and demonstrate various methods of hair care for all types and textures of hair. The objectives of this class are to develop a better understanding of one's own and others’ differences in hair; as well as to learn about: maintenance, Do It Yourself (DIY) and affordable haircare products, protection, extensions, and styling, including athletic haircare with low-maintenance styling, for all.
Tameka Jeffers | Dive into Nautical Fiction! | Grades 4-6
- Two weeks | July 26-Aug 6 | 11 am eastern
We will read and discuss one or two literary works of nautical fiction, such as 20K Leagues Under the Sea and/or Moby Dick. Students will gain an understanding of nautical vocabulary and some marine biology, while we discuss literary themes and dive into character analysis.
