Lower School

Welcome to Dwight Lower School!

I look forward to greeting our Timothy House students each morning. Arrival is an important moment when we connect and set the tone for our day. Lower School students bring confident smiles reflecting their readiness to soak up the engaging learning that awaits them.

As the first school in New York City to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program, Dwight is on the forefront of inquiry-based learning. Students are open-minded, active agents in their own education, eager to develop their inquiry, research, problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and self-management skills. They explore and investigate concepts and world issues through the lens of broad units of inquiry, such as “Where We Are in Place and Time,” “How We Express Ourselves,” and more.

Additionally, the holistic approach to teaching in our IB classrooms ensures that we teach to the “head and heart” of each child, while personalizing their educational journey through a variety of experiences within and beyond the classroom.

  • We are committed to creating an environment in which to ignite the spark of genius in every child — we identify and nourish the special interests, talents, and passions of every student and look for ways to fold these into classroom learning experiences.
  • We believe that when learning ties directly to a student's personal interests and passions, the investment and engagement in learning is dramatically more meaningful and the outcome of their work superior. Students have many opportunities to delve into areas of personal interest within IB units of inquiry.
  • Taking risks and exploring the far reaches of the world with an open mind is part of the process of becoming a global citizen. One example of how Timothy House students do this is our fifth-grade reciprocal exchange program with Dwight School London. This marks the first of many international travel and cross-campus opportunities that Dwight offers students in which they broaden their worldview and forge friendships with peers in our global family.

We are delighted to see our Timothy House students excited by the many innovative and unique experiences they have to learn to think deeply, activate their personal creativity, and energize their independent and entrepreneurial spirit on campus and around the world.

We invite you to visit our warm and supportive classrooms and to meet our talented faculty and staff dedicated to igniting the spark of genius in every child!

Sincerely,
Delphine Michaud | Head of Lower School
