Six months after signing a unique community partnership agreement with the 1199 Housing Corporation, we hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 12 to mark the official opening of our new Athletic Center. It was a great moment in our history!
The 40,000-square-foot Dwight School Athletic Center is located at the East River Landing cooperative in East Harlem, which is owned by the 1199 Housing Corporation. This newly refurbished facility includes a pool, gym, and two roof-top tennis courts to be used -- and enjoyed -- by both Dwight students and 1199 residents. Bringing shared value to all, the Athletic Center will be the home to enhanced athletic programs for Dwight students, and we look forward to expanding Dwight's physical education, after-school, and summer programs — including the introduction of a brand new Dwight swim team! The Center will also enhance the health and well-being of 1199 residents who have not been able to use the facilities for over a decade.
In his grand opening remarks, Chancellor Spahn spoke about the long-dormant facility and how it has come to life: "Together, William Dames [President of the 1199 Board] and I dared to dream, had the courage to take a risk, and signed a groundbreaking community partnership -- a model for transforming urban America. We envisioned a place where two diverse communities, without regard to personal circumstance, would create unique opportunities and new possibilities for people all ages to gain self-confidence, acquire leadership skills, and learn teamwork through physical activities, school scholarships, new job opportunities, and a range of enriching educational programs."
We were joined at the ribbon-cutting by students, members of the 1199 Board, New York City and State officials, new Head Coach for the Brooklyn Nets Jason Kidd, and East Harlem community members. Learn more by checking out The Commercial Observer article and others in our press room.
