Kindergarten to Grade 4

Drama fosters critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management, encouraging students to take creative risks and reflect on their learning. Students in kindergarten through 4th grade become expressive storytellers through creative exploration and  dramatic play. Grounded in the PYP framework, they develop imagination, empathy, and self-confidence. Whether performing on stage or supporting their peers as audience members, students grow as caring, thoughtful members of a collaborative ensemble — and discover the power of their voices, building skills that support lifelong learning and meaningful connections.

Middle School

Middle School students build their skills in creating theatrical worlds through acting, designing, directing, and playwriting. Students learn about and create within a variety of theater forms to explore ways that artists can bring history and important cultural ideas to life, raise awareness of societal issues and inspire social justice, move an audience to feel deeply about their own and others' lives, and to entertain. In the role of audience members, students consider how enacted stories shape their worldview through movies, television, advertising, and theater. They become comfortable with taking risks, receive peer feedback, and collaborate on a shared vision.

Upper School

Students expand their understanding, skills, and experience by studying, creating, and attending live theater. In grades 9 and 10, they explore a range of theatrical forms and practices, including writing and performing original works, directing their peers, virtual set design, and collaborative theater performance. Students are also encouraged to perform curricular work in Scene Nights to practice communicating with an audience.

In grades 11 and 12, students become theater artists in their own right. They study performance practice across cultures, through the lenses of theater theorists, and create unique works inspired by their studies. Theater practice at this level emphasizes not only the “how,” but also the “why” of communicating. The culmination of student work is performing pieces they build from the ground up, including staging, design, directing, and performing.
